Wiictory, or not ?

Wiictory, or not ?
Well, the launch rush is over, and the dust is now clearing. Who can declare themselves the winner of the holiday season ? Let's take a look at the numbers.

Between November 19 and December 31, more than 1.1 million Nintendo Wii systems were sold in the US. Thats almost double the approximately 687,300 PlayStation 3 systems bought after its launch on November 17 through the end of the year. In contrast, approximately 607,000 Xbox 360s were sold in 2005 after its November 22 launch.

In December 2006, the 360 sold more than 1.1 million systemswith the help of the popularity of Gears of War. By the end of 2006, Microsoft's console had sold just over 4.5 million units in the US and more than 10.4 million worldwide.

Microsoft has claimed the outright victory for the holiday season, gobbling up a 51% market share for the November and December months. Nintendo, however, isn't conceding, stating that it's shipped out half of its 4 million units to the US, and having zero stock on shelves at the years end.

Is there a clear cut winner ? I can't really answer that with all the skepticism flying about with limited stock being a factor for the PS3, and such high demand for the Wii during launch, being the reason the Xbox 360 did so well. One thing I can guarantee is, the next-gen war has truly begun.

Today, a free bonus map for another top-seller made its way to Xbox Live Marketplace. Activision has released the first multiplayer map for Call of Duty 3. The map, titled Champs, is set in a French farm town and is designed for small and medium-sized teams.

Activision is also releasing a premium COD3 map pack, the Valor Pack, which contains five more battlegrounds. The valor pack has not been given a release date and will cost gamers 800 Marketplace points ($10).
