More large law firms are representing tribes in litigation and transactions -- formerly the territory of boutiques. It's a result of more money and more legal problems for tribes whose complex layers of laws can be challenging and interesting for lawyers. Paula Yost joined Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal in 1999 and was quickly thrust into the complexities of federal Indian law. She's since co-founded the firm's Indian law practice group, which encompasses more than 25 lawyers across the country.

HARRISBURG, Pa. - Bayer Corp. has agreed to pay $8 million to 30 states and to post clinical trial results in settlement of claims that it violated state consumer protection laws by failing to adequately warn doctors and patients of the potential side effects of its withdrawn Baycol cholesterol-lowering drug, according to a petition filed Jan. 23 in Pennsylvania state court (Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, et al. v. Bayer Corporation, No. not assigned, Pa. Cmwlth.).

It's no secret that solo practitioners are more at risk of encountering drastic economic swings than those with the financial security of working at larger law firms. Such inconsistent income, however, is the nature of small-firm practice and doesn't automatically affect court-ordered payment plans, ruled a Superior Court judge in dismissing Waterbury, Conn., attorney Thomas Porzio's bid to lower his alimony payments to his ex-wife. Porzio experienced a 15.35 percent decrease in his taxable income in 2005.

New patent case filings in federal court increased by 4.2 percent between 2002 and 2003, continuing the upward trend that has resulted in a 130 percent increase in patent case filings from 1988 to 2003, according to a report released by LexisNexis.

If the current trend continues, there will again be fewer insurance cases filed in federal court this year than in 2003 and 2002, according to a report by LexisNexis. There were 3,991 cases in which "insurance" is the nature of suit filed in federal courts in the first half of 2004. That compares with 4,298 for the first half of last year and 4,463 in the first half of 2002.
