its associate salaries to $160,000, following in the footsteps of
Simpson Thacher & Bartlett and a wave of other New York firms that
matched the increase for first-years. Skadden is the first law firm with a major Washington, D.C., presence to

Two weeks after Dewey Ballantine and Orrick broke off merger talks, fallout continues. Two more partners last week decamped from Dewey, raising the question of whether the departures will mark the end of an exodus of more than a dozen partners who have left the firm after it began merger talks with Orrick or if there are more to come. The split also represents at least the fourth time in four years that Orrick has failed to cinch a merger, prompting speculation about why the firm can't close these deals.

Connecticut solo Denise Evarts has been relieved of guardian ad litem duties in the delinquency case of a 13-year-old boy, even though a judge found she committed no ethical violation by speaking with the ward without his public defender present. The judge did find that Evarts, who was appointed to represent the boy's best interests in a child abuse and neglect proceeding, used bad judgment in not conferring with the public defender before meeting with the ward and removed her from the case on that ground.

Teleconferencing technology -- so common in corporate America -- is now an option for some incarcerated defendants in Connecticut. The judges of the state's Superior Court recently approved changes to allow defendants to participate in some court proceedings via cameras linked between the courthouse and prison. Supporters say the technology will expedite things while protecting the public and cutting costs, but criminal defense attorneys complain that it could slow proceedings and reduce client face-time.
